Split Enrollment Options
AAPS high school students have the option to "split enroll," meaning they take some classes at the high school in their geographic area (Huron, Pioneer, or Skyline), and some classes at another high school, including Community. You will need to contact your counselor at the school in which you are enrolled to do this.
Guidelines:
- A student does not need to win (or even enter) the lottery at Community High School in order to split-enroll into Community.
- Any student admitted to Community may split enroll into the high school that is their "home school" (i.e., in their geographic region, or the school they would attend if they were not enrolled at Community). An exception may be made when a class the student wants to take is not offered at their home school.
- There must be an opening in the class or classes desired, and all other scheduling logistics will need to work out.
- Students from Huron and Pioneer are allowed to take up to three classes per semester at Community. (Huron students taking eight classes may take up to four classes at Community.) Students from Skyline are allowed to take up to two classes per semester at Community (due to the trimesters at Skyline). In other words, students may take up to half their classes at the other school.
- Jazz students: Many students take jazz at Community and also take band, orchestra, or choir at Huron or Pioneer. This is a great way to develop excellent jazz and classical skills through four years of high school. (Contact our Jazz Director, Jack Wagner wagnerj@aaps.k12.mi.us, if you have questions about how to do this.) The trimesters at Skyline make it tougher to take two music courses at the same time, but this does work on occasion.
How It Works:
- Community students will register for classes first (in June for Semester 1, and in December for Semester 2). At a later date, split-enrollment registration opens up (in the summer for Semester 1, and in January for Semester 2), and students from the comprehensive high schools may register for classes at Community that have openings. Split-enrollment registration continues through the district-wide "Drop/Add" dates.
- Students enrolled at Huron, Pioneer, and Skyline can register for Community classes through the guidance counselors at their own school. The counselors can see the Community schedule, class openings, teacher names, etc., and will be able to register students for open classes. Be sure to see your own counselor about your desired schedule.
- If a desired class is closed (filled), ask your counselor to check regularly during the "Drop/Add" window to see if another student has dropped the class. (Keep in mind that counselors are trying to do this for hundreds of students, so please don't over-burden them.)
- Contact your counselor at the school in which you are enrolled if you would like to split enroll into another school.
